Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) Training

NSGEU Health Safety & Environment JOHSC Training Video

The NSGEU has partnered with the provincial government through the Public Service Commission (PSC) to make occupational health and safety training available to all NSGEU members and their employers.

Registration is free to all participants who attend. Please note: your time off and related expenses are the responsibility of your employer.

There are seven courses available:

  • Hazard identification;
  • Incident investigation;
  • Introduction to Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees;
  • Introduction to occupational health and safety;
  • Occupational safety general regulations overview;
  • Occupational health and safety (OHS) for managers and supervisors;
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Access to this training is available through the Nova Scotia Government’s online registration system (https://learnnet.learnflex.net) where participants can view the training schedule; learn how to use the system; set up an account, and register for courses, all online.

Once registered for a course, employees will receive email acknowledgement of their course selection, course status and other relevant information.

For NSGEU Civil Service members without access to the Internet, you can register for a course by contacting the Public Service Commission, 424-8384. For NSGEU members who aren’t in the Civil Service, contact us at 424-4063, 1-877-556-7438, or inquiry@nsgeu.ca for more help.

Training is facilitated by instructors from within the Nova Scotia government and the NSGEU. While the majority of courses are designed for Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) members, at least two courses are suitable for all employees: Intro to OHS and WHMIS. Another course, OHS for managers and supervisors, is intended primarily for managers and supervisors, so they will be clear on their role with respect to workplace health and safety.
