NSGEU Home Support Workers Employed by VON Vote to Reject Employer’s Offer
Province-wide – Members of four NSGEU Locals, home support staff who work for the VON in Kings/Annapolis Counties (Local 31), Tri-County -Shelburne County (Local 40), Colchester & East Hants Counties (Local 35), and Pictou County (Local 85) have voted overwhelmingly to reject the employer’s offer at emergency meetings last night.
“The members are sending a strong message to the employer that it is time they had parity with other workers who do the same job and share the same qualifications but work in a hospital setting,” says Joan Jessome, President of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union. “They certainly deserve the same hourly wage their counterparts receive.”
Talks with the VON, which had entered the conciliation process, broke down on Monday afternoon.
The results of the votes are:

Local 85, VON Pictou County, voted 100% in favour of rejection.
The conciliator will be filing his report on Monday, February 17, which will trigger a 14-day countdown to a strike. The countdown would begin on Tuesday, February 18.
