Happy Pride!

In 1969 the Stonewall Inn riots in New York City happened in response to police brutality towards mainly drag queens and gay men of colour. The riots were vastly made up of activists that were the catalyst for the gay rights movement, known today as Pride.

When Pride celebrations started in Halifax, participants were forced to wear paper bags over their heads to keep their identities secret. Today, people are open and proud of who they are, and the NSGEU stands with you.

In the age of Covid, Pride committees across the province have changed the way they celebrate this year.  Although there will be no face-to-face celebrations, be assured the NSGEU Human Rights committee will be there celebrating with you.

Today, more than ever it’s important to celebrate Pride and the inclusion of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. First, the acceptance and acknowledgement that we live in a society that needs to be inclusive must happen. We must be intentional, deliberate and specific about inclusion. If not, society will very likely be excluding whole groups of the queer community who are not seen, not heard and not centred.
