Important Update for Local 267

Dear member,

Today, the NSCC announced a series of budget decisions that will impact the jobs of 17 NSGEU members. The employer had to address a budget deficit created by the funding cut imposed by the Premier in his latest budget.

These cuts show a shortsightedness and lack of vision from a government that is already out of ideas. No province has ever cut their way to prosperity, and cutting the post-secondary sector at a time when the federal government is funding projects that require skilled labour shows that the premier is out of touch with the needs of our province.

The NSCC provides programs, education and helps train the skilled labour who our province depends on and needs for future economic growth. Cutting this valuable sector is bad for the economy.

Those impacted by these decisions have received notice of the coming changes. NSGEU members have strong job security language in their collective agreement and while this news is upsetting, the union is ready and committed to stand with our members throughout the next steps.

What has become clear in the weeks and months since the premier tabled his budget is that this government does not have a plan for how to move the province forward. Layoffs and job cuts, regardless if they try to camouflage it by calling it restructuring, is bad for our economy.

The NSCC was put in a tough position by the government’s cuts, but it is equally disappointing that the employer chose to balance their books on the backs of hard working employees who are key to the overall delivery of programs and services.

Despite the words of this premier, his government has not been friendly to working people, and its time they are held accountable for their budget and their lack of a plan. The union is ready to stand with workers across the province to push back against these unfair changes.
