Solidarity Rally for Halifax Water and Wastewater Workers

The NSGEU is encouraging its members to attend if possible:

Rally in Solidarity with Halifax Water and Wastewater Workers: Tuesday, May 12th at 5:00 pm at Grand Parade (In front of City Hall):

Talks have broken down between workers at Halifax Water and the employer. The 330 workers are members of CUPE Local 227 and CUPE Local 1431. We anticipate there may be a lockout early this week.

The Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council encourages all unions and our social movement allies to come to a solidarity rally on Tuesday, May 12th at 5:00 pm at Grand Parade (In front of City Hall).

The main issue at the bargaining table is around the pension plan. The employer’s proposal would cut pensions for young workers by between 20% to 25%. The workers have made a proposal to the employer that would save HRM $25 million a year while protecting pension benefits, but the employer has rejected it.

We encourage everyone to come out and show these workers they are not alone in their struggle – Halifax is a union town!

There is also a Facebook event for the action, it can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1437765393205470/
