Local 64 – Members vote in favour of strike to support bargaining committee

Local 64 members have delivered a very strong show of support to their bargaining committee today, voting in favour of strike, if necessary, to back their demands and take the employer’s proposed concessions off the bargaining table.

An overwhelming 92 per cent of ballots cast were in favour of strike, with a 77 per cent strike mandate delivered.

Your bargaining committee is scheduled to begin the conciliation on June 26th and again on June 27th.

What is Conciliation?

Conciliation is a requirement under the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act that takes place when regular negotiations fail to reach an agreement. Either party may apply to the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education requesting the services of a Conciliation Officer. The Conciliation Officer does not have the power to impose a settlement on either party. Instead, their role is to mediate between the parties and help them reach an agreement. We are committed to reaching a tentative agreement that your Bargaining Committee can recommend to you.

We are optimistic that the strong message members have sent will help us with this next step of bargaining. Thank you for your show of confidence and support!

If you have any questions or concerns about the vote or the upcoming conciliation process, please don’t hesitate to contact your bargaining committee or the NSGEU at 424-4063 (1-877-556-7438 toll-free) or inquiry@nsgeu.ca.
