As President of NSGEU, I am pleased to invite you to the first NSGEU Leadership Symposium to be held at the NSGEU Office, Conference Centre, in Dartmouth on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

Symposium registration will begin at 8:30 am with Symposium hours from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Leadership Symposium will be open to NSGEU Executive, Board of Directors, Local Presidents, Regional Council Chairpersons and Occupational Council Chairpersons.

If you serve in more than one of the roles cited, you are entitled to designate a representative from the area that requires representation; i.e.:

  • if you are a Board member and Local President, you can designate a member from the local executive to attend in the President’s role
  • if you are a Board member and Chairperson of a regional or occupational council, you can designate someone from the council’s executive to attend in the council role
  • if you are a Local President and Chairperson of a regional or occupational council, you can designate a member of the council’s executive to attend in the council role

The purpose of the Leadership Symposium is to ensure that the work is carried out by many hands not many hats.

Please note only Umbrella Presidents will be invited for locals with a sub-local structure.  For those locals with a sub-local structure and no Umbrella President, the sub-locals will be asked to designate one President to attend to represent the Local.

The symposium will discuss the work completed at the Special Convention.  A more detailed agenda will be available following a meeting next week with the Ad Hoc Leadership Symposium Committee.

You are expected to arrange for time off in your workplace and notify the NSGEU of the time off you require.

Accommodations will be provided at the Holiday Inn Harbourview, 101 Wyse Rd, Dartmouth for members who live a distance farther than 100 kilometers.  As per NSGEU policy, shared accommodations are mandatory for ALL Union paid overnight accommodations unless otherwise requested or approved. Understanding also that there are certain circumstances where shared accommodations may strongly impede the work of the union, for various reasons, this is the policy:

Meetings/Conferences

For union members participating in meetings/conferences, requests for any reason for single accommodations shall result in the requirement of the member to pay a $15.00 per night fee to offset the higher cost of the room.

Because a number of our members encounter harmful allergic reactions when exposed to certain scents, the NSGEU has adopted a scent elimination policy. This policy prohibits members from using scented colognes, perfumes, deodorants, hairsprays, after shave, skin lotion, etc., while participating in NSGEU workshops, meetings, etc. Therefore, you are asked to use unscented products at this function. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation. Please click here to download a copy of some of the relevant NSGEU policies.

On-site childcare is not available. Childcare expenses will be reimbursed to a maximum of $8.00/hr as per NSGEU Childcare/Eldercare Policy -Section 18.10.

Please RSVP and advise your time off and/or hotel requirements (ensure that you advise if you are willing to share or whether you are requesting single accommodations) by contacting NSGEU offices by email @ Leadership@nsgeu.ca
