Local 32 – Yarmouth Argyle Home Support Services Union Filing For Conciliation

Dear member,

Following three days of negotiations, your bargaining committee has reached an impasse with your employer and has filed for conciliation. We are sending this email as an update on negotiations and to outline the important next steps.

Negotiations were very productive and now wages and shift & weekend premiums are the only outstanding issues.

The NSGEU will write to the Department of Labour immediately and seek the assistance of a conciliation officer who will help the parties attempt to conclude a collective agreement. NSGEU will advise the membership as soon as we have dates for conciliation. It is expected to take several weeks.

What is Conciliation? Conciliation is a requirement under the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act that takes place when regular negotiations fail to reach an agreement. Either party may apply to the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education requesting the services of a Conciliation Officer. The Conciliation Officer does not have the power to impose a settlement on either party. Instead, their role is to mediate between the parties and help them reach an agreement. We are committed to reaching a tentative agreement that your bargaining committee can recommend to you.

If you have any questions about the process or the steps to come, please contact a member of your bargaining committee or the NSGEU by calling 902-424-4063 (toll-free 1-877-556-7438) or emailing inquiry@nsgeu.ca
