Local 50 Sherbrooke Village Update on Pension Plan
Dear member,
On Wednesday, March 23rd, representatives from the union and legal counsel met with the Pension Service Corporation and representatives from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, as well as the former Executive Director of Sherbrooke Village, to discuss the ongoing issue of transferring into the Public Service Superannuation Plan (PSSP).
It was brought to our attention at that meeting that plan members have been incorrectly informed by your employer that they are paying into the PSSP as of February 1st 2016. That is not the case: they are still participating members of the Sherbrooke Village pension plan.
The employer has not yet taken the necessary steps to register the Sherbrooke Village pension plan members in the PSSP on a go-forward basis.
We continue to work with all parties to move the process along, and are currently waiting on government to introduce legislation which would allow plan members’ prior service to be transferred into the PSSP. We anticipate that plan members would join the PSSP once legislation is finalized.
We are also reaching out to key cabinet ministers to ensure they are aware of the urgency of the situation.
We realize that this pension issue only directly affects a small portion of the local, however there are implications for Sherbrooke Village if this issue is not remedied in a timely manner. We are working diligently to ensure this matter is resolved as soon as possible.
