Local 87 – Parkland At The Lakes – Conciliation Approved

Local 87 – Parkland At The Lakes

Dear Local 87 member,

Members of your bargaining committee, your Chief Negotiator, Grant Vaughan, and your Employee Relations Officer, Lori Smith, met on April 24th to count your strike vote ballots.

At that time, the NSGEU and your bargaining committee believed there were 38 members of your bargaining unit, 31 of whom cast ballots. The result of that strike vote was 27 in favor of taking strike action to support your bargaining demands (87 per cent).

In the following days, your employer provided the bargaining committee a list that identifies a total of 55 members at Parkland at the Lakes.

Your bargaining committee is pleased with the high percentage of support from the members who voted, but is concerned that not all members are receiving the most up-to-date information. Please contact a member of your bargaining committee if you are not receiving emails, phone calls or mail from NSGEU. Ask your fellow members if they have signed a membership card.  It is crucial that you receive these very important bargaining updates.

We have applied for conciliation and it has been approved.

Conciliation is the process of intervention in collective bargaining by a neutral third party knowledgeable in effective negotiation procedures. This third party is called a ‘Conciliator.’ This person helps employers and trade unions reach a collective agreement, but has no authority to make decisions. Conciliators are appointed by the Minister of Labour and Workforce Development (or a delegate) at the written request of one or both parties to assist with collective bargaining when negotiations have broken down.

If, after meeting with the parties, the Conciliator determines that an agreement will not be reached, he/she declares an impasse. The law then requires the Conciliator to file a confidential report with the Minister of Labour and Workforce Development.

If you have any questions about this process or the steps to come, please contact a member of your bargaining committee or the NSGEU Labour Resource Centre at 424-4063 (toll free 1-877-556-7438), or email us at inquiry@nsgeu.ca
