Media Release: Gov’t Reset Needs to Focus on Health Care Crisis, Union Ready to Help

Union members hope proroguing the legislature means Stephen McNeil is ready to reset the Liberal Government’s agenda away from attacking workers and towards working together to find solutions to fix the current crisis in health care, says NSGEU President Jason MacLean.

“Traditionally, when a Premier prorogues the legislature it marks a change in direction from the current path,” said MacLean. “For almost five years this Liberal government has attacked working people. We hope the Premier is ready to admit what is so obvious to people across Nova Scotia; health care is in crisis. The NSGEU is ready to work with government and help find solutions for patients, seniors and families who need reliable health care.”

The NSGEU has released two reports, “Code Crisis” and “Code Critical,” which outlines specific solutions that would help improve the system immediately.

“Over the last five years this government has avoided admitting health care is in crisis and instead has offered excuses and announcements that will take years to implement,” said MacLean. “Our members live and work on the front lines of health care and they are doing their best to hold a broken system together. Their voices have value and need to be included in addressing this crisis.”

“The NSGEU expects to hear solutions today and we are ready to be part of that process. If not, I expect we will see this government waste another three years while the system crumbles and Nova Scotian families suffer.”
