Media Release: New Executive Elected, Key Resolutions Passed

During the final day of NSGEU’s Triennial Convention, the NSGEU’s Executive team – consisting of President, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice-Presidents, and Secretary-Treasurer – was re-elected by delegates.

Jason MacLean, a Correctional Officer from Sydney, was re-elected as the union’s President.

“I am incredibly honoured to be re-elected by delegates to continue to serve as President of the NSGEU,” said President Jason MacLean.

“Thank you for having the confidence in me. What I heard loud and clear from delegates here is we need to remain united. That will continue to be the focus for me, moving forward.”

Sandra Mullen, a Licensing Officer with the Department of Community Services in Yarmouth, was re-elected as 1st Vice-President; Kim Jenkins, an Administrative Assistant with the IWK and works in Food & Supprt Services with the Nova Scotia Health Authority, was re-elected as 2nd Vice-President; Tammy Gillis, Deputy Prothonotary with the Department of Justice, was acclaimed as 3rd Vice-President; and Darren McPhee, a Social Worker for the Department of Community Services, was acclaimed as Secretary-Treasurer.

The 322 voting delegates in attendance at Convention passed a number of key resolutions during the four-day convention, paving the way for a number of campaigns during the union’s upcoming three-year term, including a campaign to move the government of Nova Scotia to acknowledge and address the health care crisis in Nova Scotia.

“Our health care system is in crisis, and all of our members in attendance at Convention – whether they work in health care or not – recognize the urgent need for us to campaign on behalf of Nova Scotians on this critical issue,” said President Jason MacLean.

“Premier Stephen McNeil needs to accept the invitation we’ve extended to work with us to make improvements to frontline care.”

There were a number of other key resolutions passed to ensure the NSGEU can continue to effectively represent members over the coming three-year term, including a resolution to oppose privatization of health care trades, maintenance and plant operations jobs at P3 health care facilities in Nova Scotia; to formally integrate home care services into our health care system; and to implement the recommendations of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Working Group on domestic violence and provide ten days paid domestic violence leave as a basic minimum labour standard.
