Local 87 – Parkland at the Lakes – Union filing for Conciliation

On Wednesday, July 24th, 2013, your bargaining committee and employer reached an impasse at the bargaining table during conciliation.

Your bargaining committee and employer met for seven (7) days of bargaining prior to entering into conciliation.  The parties then met for three (3) days of conciliation.

What is Conciliation? Conciliation is the process of intervention in collective bargaining by a neutral third party knowledgeable in effective negotiation procedures.  This third party is called a ‘Conciliator’. This person helps employers and trade unions reach a collective agreement but has no authority to make decisions. Conciliators are appointed by the Minister of Labour and Workforce Development (or a delegate) at the written request of one or both parties to assist with collective bargaining when negotiations have broken down.

Your bargaining committee intends to file for First Contract Arbitration. We will continue to update you and will let you know once the application has been made.

What is First Contract Arbitration? Either side (the union or employer) has the right to apply to the Labour Board of Nova Scotia for an imposed settlement in cases where a first collective agreement is not achieved after a period of one year.

Thank you for continuing to support your bargaining committee, which is working hard on your behalf to achieve a fair first collective agreement.

If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please don’t hesitate to contact your bargaining committee or the NSGEU at 424-4063 (1-877-556-7438 toll-free) or inquiry@nsgeu.ca
