MEDIA RELEASE: Executive Re-Elected, Key Resolutions Passed
Dartmouth — During the final day of NSGEU’s Triennial Convention, an Executive team – consisting of President, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice-Presidents, and Secretary-Treasurer – was elected by delegates.
Sandra Mullen, a Licensing Officer with the Department of Community Services in Yarmouth (Local 16), was acclaimed for her second term as President.
“It is a privilege to continue to serve the membership of the NSGEU in this role,” said President Mullen.
“I look forward to continuing to do the important work of the union, strengthening and improving working conditions for our 38,000 members, and all workers in this province.”
Hugh Gillis, a Correctional Officer (Local 480C), was re-elected as 1st Vice-President; Tammy Gillis, a Family Court Officer and the Small Claims Court Officer with the Department of Justice (Local 2), was re-elected as 2nd Vice-President; Peter Perry, an Anesthesia Assistant (Local 122), was re-elected as 3rd Vice-President; and Darren McPhee, a Community Care Worker for the Department of Community Services (Local 8), was acclaimed as Secretary-Treasurer.
The 370 voting delegates in attendance at Convention made it clear that members are still struggling with sustained inflationary pressures. They passed a number of key resolutions during the three-day convention, including direction to propose Cost of Living Allowance language in addition to annual economic adjustments, at all bargaining tables; to table language to maintain and strengthen job protection language in the civil service, and to create language to be proposed at the bargaining table to address the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace. Additional resolutions focused on improving educational opportunities for NSGEU members, and directing our incoming Board to explore establishing a new fund to support members who are experiencing domestic violence.
“We have a great deal of hard work ahead of us, both at the bargaining table and ensuring that the delegates’ vision for the upcoming term is realized, but we are ready for the challenge,” said Mullen.
Other highlights of Convention include:
- Remarks from Siobhán Vipond, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC);
- An address from Bert Blundon, President of the National Union of Public & General Employees (NUPGE);
- An evening performance by comedian Big Daddy Tazz;
- Locals collectively made donations of more than $10,800 for the NSGEU’s Cancer Care Fund; $4,100 to support those experiencing domestic violence; and $300 for Feed Nova Scotia.
