NSGEU Local 81, Mount St. Vincent University Support Staff, Vote to Strike

Halifax – Members of NSGEU Local 81, support staff at Mount St. Vincent University, vote 87 per cent in favour of a strike to back up their bargaining demands during conciliation.

Conciliation dates have been scheduled for January 17 and 18, 2013.

“The members of Local 81 are standing squarely behind their bargaining demands as they enter the conciliation process with the employer,” says Joan Jessome, President of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union. “These women and men provide important services for the students in almost every Department at the university. They deserve a fair contract that respects the work they do.”

Outstanding issues include: the term of the agreement, wages, hours of work, overtime, vacation, and contracting out.

There are approximately 100 members of the local who provide support services for Mount St. Vincent University. Members of the local work in the Bookstore, Registrar’s Office, Facilities management, Financial Services, IT Services, Library, Athletics and Recreation, the Print Shop, and many other Departments at the University.
