Delegates elect, swear in new Executive
Halifax – Joan Jessome has been acclaimed for her 8th term as President of the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union.
Jessome was the first woman elected to the position in 1999. On Saturday, she broke another record as the longest serving president in the NSGEU’s history.
Other positions in the provincial executive were heavily contested. There were five nominees for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. In the end, the incumbent, Darren McPhee, a social worker, was re-elected. Delegates also re-elected Jason MacLean, a Correctional Officer, as 1st Vice-President.
Kelly Murphy, a group home worker, was elected as 2nd Vice-President, and Dustin Rioux, a Deputy Sheriff, as 3rd Vice-President.
Highlights of the four-day convention included a keynote address from author and columnist, Linda McQuaig, a speech from Premier Darrell Dexter that brought the delegates to their feet, and an overwhelming show of support for the fired workers at Just Us Coffee and a number of other charitable causes.
