NSGEU celebrates Pride!

In 1987, Halifax’s Pride march was a very different event than it is today. We have certainly come a long way!

During that inaugural event, about 75 members of our city’s gay and lesbian community marched through the North End. At that time, this community had no legal protection from discrimination, and were often subject to prejudice because of their sexual orientation.

Twenty-six years later, and Halifax Pride has grown into a true community event, one which the NSGEU is pleased to be a part of, yet again!

“It’s important for our members to stand together and celebrate. This is an empowering event, and one that speaks to acceptance and celebrates diversity,” said Adrienne Le Blanc, chair of the NSGEU’s Human Rights Committee, “Of course, it’s also a lot of fun!”

This marks Halifax’s 26^th annual Pride festival, with a wide range of events planned from July 18^th to 28^th.

One of the highlights of the 11-day celebration is the Pride parade, which is being held on Saturday, July 27^th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The route starts at Barrington Street, makes its way up Spring Garden Road and winds up at the Garrison Grounds.

In conjunction with the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, the NSGEU will again have a float in this year’s parade, and would like to encourage you to come join the crowd with your family and friends!

We will also be taking part in the annual Pride parade being held in downtown Sydney, Cape Breton on Saturday, August 10^th, starting at noon. Come join us!
