Sunday is William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day (Davis Day)

This Sunday June 11th is the 92nd Anniversary of the commemoration of William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day(“Davis Day“). It is a day that we commemorate the death of coal miner William Davis who was shot to death on a mining strike at approximately 11 a.m. on June 11th, 1925. It’s a time to honour the man, William Davis, and the courage of miners like him who stood up for the right to strike and fought to improve their working conditions. When we stand together to improve our work-life including health & safety, we stand on the backs of those, like William Davis, who have come before us.

As a labour union, we are proud to represent our 31,000 members who provide a vast array of public services across the province and we will continue to press on for safe, healthy, respectful workplaces with decent wages, pensions and benefits for all.

There are two ceremonies we know of this year on Sunday, June 11 (but keep your eyes and ears open for any others in your community):

Community: Glace Bay

Place: Miners’ Museum, on Berkeley St. in Glace Bay

Time: 9:45 a.m.

Community: Springhill

Place : United Church at the corner of Junction and Main

Time: Wreath laying is at 2:30 p.m. ; and Reception is at 3 p.m.
