Dear NSGEU members,
Please read this article by Metro’s columnist Stephen Kimber as he describes the legislation as “politically targeted to weaken the province’s nemesis, the Nova Scotia Government Employees’ Union.”
In his article, he correctly asserts the “legislation appears to be a slap in the face to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ freedom-of-association provision, not to mention a dog’s breakfast of international labour laws and treaties to which Canada is a signatory.”
Kimber rightly concludes, “what is clear is that, whatever his decision, it will not be the end of the story. The validity of this law will almost certainly ultimately be decided by the courts – at a great financial and social cost.”
