Resolutions Questions & Answers

Questions & Answers

What if I cannot attend a Local meeting or the Local has no interest in supporting my
resolution?

If possible, you should attend the appropriate Local meeting to speak to your resolution. If that is not possible, you can talk to your Local President or a member of your Local Executive and ask them if they will consider your resolution at the next Local meeting, or at a specialized Local meeting called to deal with resolutions. If you need further help, or you need contact information for your Local Executive, please call the Resource Centre at the NSGEU at: 424.4063 or 1.877.556.7438

What is the role of the General Resolutions Committee?

The resolutions committee is made up of NSGEU members; one from each region. They review each resolution and make sure that it is consistent with the NSGEU Constitution and By-Laws. Remember if your idea requires a change to the Constitution it must be submitted, by your Local, on the proper form, to the Constitution Committee.

Sometimes the Resolutions Committee receives more than one resolution about the same idea, and they will recommend one, or ask the submitting Local(s) to agree to put them together. The committee recommends to delegate at Convention concurrence or non-concurrence (support or non-support) for each resolution.

What is the role of the Constitution and By-Laws Resolutions Committee?

The constitution committee is made up of NSGEU members; one from each region. The role of the Constitution Committee is to review the submissions for changes to the Constitution and By-Laws. The committee reviews Amendment resolutions and ensures that they are in order, and that they include all required article changes to the Constitution and By-Laws. They coordinate resolutions on the same subject or on occasion they may also prepare a substitute resolution if in the opinion of the committee, it would better present the idea(s) intended by the submitters. In the past some members have spotted inconsistencies in the document and the amendment is mostly housekeeping. In the past, some resolutions have suggested changes to the structure of the union.
