| Everybody says young people need to plan ahead for retirement. But how are you supposed to save when you’re trying to make ends meet with a crappy part-time job? A whole generation of young Canadians are now in the same boat: working jobs with lousy pay and no benefits, finding decent jobs later and later in life, and facing the prospect of never having a pension at work. This webinar punctures the myths regarding young people and retirement. Isn’t having a pension just a matter of getting a degree and finding the right job? I heard the Canada Pension Plan just a Ponzi scheme that’s never going to be there when I retire. Won’t I have work until I croak anyway? And isn’t calling for better pensions another case of baby-boomers enriching themselves at the expense of young people?
Separating fact from fiction, this webinar will look at dead ends and real solutions for today’s overqualified, underemployed youth. In plain, straight-forward language, the discussion will unpack work and retirement issues from the perspective of young workers.
Two young workers will lead the discussion. Amy Huziak is National Young Workers Representative with the Canadian Labour Congress in Ottawa. David Leacock is National Representative with Unifor’s Pensions and Benefits Department in Toronto. This webinar is designed for young workers, students and activists with questions about work, pensions, and retirement security. |
