We understand that many of our members have been left scrambling to make last-minute childcare arrangements as the result of the government’s careless decision to close our public schools with less than 48 hours notice.
Our health care members have been reminded by their employer that they are expected to be at work this week, no matter what. We are sure that all parents are doing their best to ensure they find a safe childcare arrangement at the last minute, but we would like to remind all of our members that many of your collective agreements contain provisions for different types of leaves, and if you cannot make arrangements, then you should apply for an approved leave from work. If you are unsure of what type of leave to apply for, contact the NSGEU (see information below).
If all else fails – you’ve applied for leave, have been denied and you cannot show up to work – rest assured that your union will represent all members who encounter difficulties getting leave.
If you cannot make childcare arrangements, but your leave is approved and you will be staying home with your children, we would like to encourage you to bring them down to the Legislature tomorrow (Monday, December 5th) any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to join the rally. We need to stand together and remind this government that there is a price to pay for trampling workers’ rights and throwing peoples’ lives into chaos!
