June is National Indigenous History Month

June is Indigenous People’s History Month, a month designed to celebrate and learn more about the cultural diversity of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada. To learn more about Canada’s First Peoples click here https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1621447127773/1621447157184

As part of the shared history of Canadians, this year is a sombre and difficult one, with the horrifying discovery of the remains of 215 children at a former residential school in British Columbia. While Canada celebrates the cultures of our Indigenous peoples, we must also highlight our colonial past and the impact of the institutions of systemic racism and genocide, such as the impact of residential schools across this country.

Together, let’s celebrate these cultures, but also remember the lives that have been lost and destroyed by our colonial past. To find out more about our country’s history with residential schools and the findings of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, please visit www.nctr.ca.
