Local 87 – Parkland at the Lakes Strike Vote Results & Meeting Scheduled

Good morning,

Thank you to everyone who participated in our strike vote. Your bargaining committee is pleased to announce that 85 per cent of those who voted, voted in favour of a strike to back your bargaining committee’s demands at the table.

We believe this will send a very clear message to your employer, as we head back into conciliation on Thursday with the goal of reaching a deal. We are currently in a countdown to a strike, and we have been called back to the table by the Conciliation Officer to try and reach a deal before the countdown expires on March 6th.

What is Conciliation? Conciliation is a requirement under the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act that takes place when regular negotiations fail to reach an agreement. Either party may apply to the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education requesting the services of a Conciliation Officer. The Conciliation Officer does not have the power to impose a settlement on either party. Instead, their role is to mediate between the parties and help them reach an agreement. We are committed to reaching a tentative agreement that your Bargaining Committee can recommend to you.

We are holding a meeting next Wednesday, March 11th, from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Common Room at the Sobeys on Baker Drive so we can discuss the outcome of conciliation, and hold another vote on the employer’s offer coming out of conciliation tomorrow. Please make every effort to attend this meeting.
