Unionized newsroom staff at The Chronicle Herald have been on strike for more than 500 days now, as their employer continues to refuse to negotiate a fair collective agreement with them.
These workers are facing a concerted union-busting attempt by management of the newspaper. The employer has demanded extreme wage and benefit rollbacks, the erosion of pay equity language in the collective agreement, and has announced plans to make further cutbacks to newsroom staff. The employer is also attempting to weaken the jurisdiction of the union by trying to remove a number of positions from the bargaining union or eliminate those positions and replace them with freelancers who are working on contracts with no benefits or seniority.
This is unacceptable behaviour.
We are asking NSGEU members in the Metro area to please join NSGEU 2nd Vice President Kim Jenkins on their lunch break to show their solidarity with these workers at a BBQ/rally planned for this Friday (June 16th) at noon. Come join us as we walk the line in support of our fellow union members!
