Rally at the Legislature TODAY at 1 p.m.!

Members of unions from across the province, NSGEU health care and community services workers, and Local 97 members are being asked to gather at the legislature at 1 p.m. today for a rally!

They are speaking out against the oppressive legislation (Bill 37) that is slowly making its way through the legislature. This bill will affect more than 33,000 workers from throughout this province, and is among the worst in the country, as it will force 85 to 90 per cent of workers to stay on the job during strike, which renders any job action completely ineffective. This means employers will be in a position to claw back benefits, and unions will have very little ability to fight back. Bill 37 also includes a “poison pill:” a form of arbitration that is heavily tilted towards the province and the employer and includes the Provinces’ “ability to pay” as a criteria the arbitrator must consider.

Nurses, health care workers and their supporters turned out in droves to speak out against Bill 37 at law amendments committee. Their stories were so powerful, and there were so many people who turned up to speak out against this legislation, the passage of the bill has been delayed!

This means Local 97 members are very likely to go on strike legally as of 7:01 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, April 3^rd). If you are a Local 97 member, PLEASE watch your email for further information on this today, and speak with your unit contacts and coworkers!
