Rally for Equality (CNIB)
Date/Time
Nov 12, 2015 - 11:30 AM - 1:30 PMRally for Equality: Why are blind Nova Scotians treated unfairly?
As a result of the lack of government funding for vision rehabilitation, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) has recently been forced to eliminate 5.25 positions – and more cuts are coming.
This means Nova Scotians with vision loss won’t have access to critical vision rehabilitation therapy – to learn skills and techniques for everyday activities that sighted people take for granted, like preparing meals, crossing the street, reading emails, and managing medications.
Did you know that people who have lost their sight are currently relying on charitable dollars to receive essential rehabilitation that allows them to remain independent, healthy and active, in their homes and communities?
When a Nova Scotian requires rehabilitation for reasons other than vision loss (as a result of a stroke, a brain injury, hearing loss or an amputation, for example) rehabilitative services, like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and the support of an audiologist or social worker are provided within our health care system.
So, why is rehabilitation for Nova Scotians who have lost their sight dependent upon a charity’s ability to raise dollars?
The NSGEU is asking members to consider attending a rally being organized by the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) on Thursday, November 12th.
They need our help to urge the government of Nova Scotia to provide sufficient, sustainable funding for vision rehabilitation therapy.

- 11:30 a.m. Meet at Grand Parade Square in front of City Hall.
