Where does this day come from?
The International day against homophobia and transphobia comes from Quebec. Fondation Émergence created in 2003 the first national day against homophobia. Since then, Émergence organizes an awareness campaign every year. Other organizations have joined in on celebrating this day and it is now celebrated in many countries.
Why May 17?
May 17 is a symbolic date for homosexual people. Homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders of the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 1990.

Greetings,
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB) falls on May 17, 2022. The day of action is intended to raise awareness and mobilize the public around ending discrimination and violence faced by 2SLGBTQI people globally. To help mark the date, we have prepared various assets that you are welcome to share and use:
- A written statement on IDAHOTB highlighting some of the initial findings of our survey on Harassment and Violence in Canadian Workplaces;
- Sample social media messages and graphics; and
- A tweet action calling on the federal government to ratify and implement International Labour Organization Convention no. 190 on Violence and Harassment (C-190).
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at human-rights@clcctc.ca.Please keep an eye out for our Pride 2022 update and social media assets, which we will be sharing in the coming weeks!
In solidarity,
Larry Rousseau
