NSGEU recogizes and honours June 11, Davis Day
NSGEU recognizes and honours June 11, Davis Day, a day of tribute to miners. This year marks the 88th anniversary of the death of coal miner William Davis who was shot and killed near New Waterford during a strike over wages.
The right to strike, together with the courage of workers determined to improve their working conditions, have paved the way for the workplace rights we now have. When we stand together to improve our work-life, we stand on the backs of those who have come before us. We are proud to be an organization that represents workers and will continue to press on for safe, healthy, respectful workplaces with decent wages, pensions and benefits for all.
There will be a service in New Waterford at Calvin United Church, 417 Smith St. at 10 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Miners’ Memorial Park in Davis Square. The guest speaker will be Eddie Yankovich, UMWA international vice-president for District 2.
Municipal and provincial dignitaries, including the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, are expected and the wreath-laying will be followed by refreshments and entertainment at the Army Navy Airforce Club in New Waterford at noon.
