Message from President Joan Jessome on the decision to end door-to-door delivery by Canada Post:

Like many Canadians, I was shocked to hear that management at Canada Post had decided to end door-to-door mail delivery and increase the cost of sending mail.

Rather than thinking outside of the box and drawing on workers’ expertise to find financially viable and innovative ways to continue to deliver this valuable service to citizens, management has chosen the easy way out: to cut services and raise their rates.

What is almost as disappointing as this decision is the casual ambivalence with which it was met, as we will see almost 8,000 good jobs evaporate from the Canadian economy as a result.

Furthermore, while many of us are fortunate enough to say that travelling to a community mailbox to pick up our mail is not an issue, this new system will surely create a huge barrier for many others, like senior citizens, people with disabilities and those confined to their homes. The new, higher prices will also make it even harder for low income families to access this service.

We have an obligation to stand up and protect this valuable public service not only for ourselves, but for society’s most vulnerable and for future generations. At the NSGEU, we stand in solidarity with our Brothers and Sisters at CUPW, and hope that you choose to do the same.

In solidarity,

Joan Jessome, President, NSGEU

EVENTS

Rally to SAVE CANADA POST on Monday, January 27 at 7:30 am at the Almon St. Post office in Halifax (nearest interchange is Almon St. and Windsor St.)

CUPW Atlantic Region will be holding a strategy session January 25  at the Dartmouth Holiday Inn Harbourview in the Alderney room at 7pm. We hope you can attend! Included in this event we will be hosting a public presentation by Brother Geoff Bickerton, Research Director for the CUPW on postal banking. As Canada Post is determined to proceed with the destruction of our public postal service, postal banking is just one of many options that Canada Post should be considering to increase revenues. We feel it is important that the public has an opportunity to be informed on how beneficial postal banking would be to Canada Post and to the public.
