IWK LPN Decision
Good afternoon,
We have received a decision from Arbitrator Augustus Richardson which has determined that IWK LPNs are not eligible for further retroactivity resulting from the 12 per cent wage increase gained by LPNs in 2020.
NSGEU had argued that a Memorandum of Agreement entered into by the union and IWK from 2011 to 2018 should cause the employer to provide further retroactivity. However, the NSGEU was not successful in its argument during the hearing, which was held on February 8th, 2022.
Instead, the Arbitrator concluded the MOA limited any increases that matched CDHA to the 2011 to 2018 term of the MOA. The CDHA classification review of LPNs finished in 2020.
LPNs at the IWK and CDHA did both receive the 12 per cent increase that arose from the classification review and are now paid at the same rate as a result.
NSGEU said it would pursue the case to the end. The union has been fighting for retroactivity for this group for almost two years, and this is an unfortunate conclusion to the case. You can read the entire decision here.
