NS Government Announces Recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day as Holiday

Dear members,

The Government of Nova Scotia has just announced that they will annually recognize September 30 as Truth and Reconciliation Day beginning in 2021. You can read their release here: https://novascotia.ca/news/release/?id=20210903008

We are very pleased they have chosen to honour this important day and urge all members to take time on September 30 to learn about and honour Indigenous history and the harm done through the residential school system.

As of now, the government has indicated that provincial government offices, public schools and regulated child care will be closed. Businesses will have the choice, as they do on other occasions, to remain open.

Some of our members will clearly fall into these areas or have provisions in their collective agreements where they receive federal holidays. Other employers will be clarifying whether they will be recognizing this holiday in the near future.

If you have any questions about whether your employer will be recognizing this holiday and you have not received an answer from them, please contact us.
