Support Striking Chronicle Herald Newsroom Staff!

 

The journalists, photographers and editors at the Chronicle Herald newspaper (represented by CWA Canada’s Halifax Typographical Union) have been on strike for more than five weeks at this time.

These workers are facing a concerted union-busting attempt by the Chronicle Herald management. The employer has demanded extraordinarily serious wage and benefit rollbacks, the erosion of pay equity language in the Collective Agreement which has for many years ensured gender-based wage parity, and has announced their intent to do severe cutbacks in the newsroom. Further, the employer is attempting to weaken the jurisdiction of the union by attempting to remove a number of positions from the bargaining union or eliminate those positions and replace them with freelancers who are working on piecework contracts with no benefits or seniority.

There are several events occurring THIS WEEK in support of the striking workers at the Herald. Please see below:

 

Join us in rallies of support:

  • Tuesday, March 1st Information Picket by Halifax Typographical Union, 3 to 5:30 p.m. in front of the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, 1919 Upper Water St. in Halifax;
  • Wednesday, March 2nd The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is holding a Rally of Support of the Striking Herald Workers from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on the Herald’s main picket line at 2717 Joseph Howe Avenue, Halifax (this Rally of Support will be immediately followed by a Press Conference featuring Martin O’Hanlon, the National President of CWA Canada, which is the national parent union of the Halifax Typographical Union, and representatives of the striking workers and others);
  • Wednesday March 2nd (from 2 to 3:30 p.m.) on the main picket line at the Herald, there will be a Students & Freelancers Solidarity Picket for the Halifax Typographical Union, organized by CWA Canada Associate Members, CMG Freelance, the Dalhousie Gazette, the Halifax Media Co-op and others (a Facebook Event Page for the Student & Freelancers Solidarity Picket can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/1703406343234197/);
  • Wednesday, March 2nd in Sydney, Cape Breton, Unifor Local 4600 has organized a Rally of Support from 4 to 5 p.m. at 500 George Street (across from Tim Hortons). Please bring flags and banners!
