MEDIA ADVISORY: Rally to stop cuts to support staff at NSCAD

MEDIA ADVISORY

For Immediate Release:

Date: June 24, 2015

Rally to stop cuts to support staff at NSCAD.

Place: Fountain Campus, 5163 Duke St.,

Date: Thursday, June 25

Time: noon – 1 p.m.

NSCAD announced last week, as part of their new “Organizational Framework”, they are laying off 7 Administrative Professionals and 9 Custodial staff – 16 support staff in total. Many of these workers have been NSCAD employees for between 20 and 30 years. NSCAD’s plan is to contract out the custodial work.

Unless this decision is reversed, NSCAD will lose decades of experience and knowledge these employees bring to their jobs each day. Fewer employees and contracted-out work will hurt the services to students and faculty at the University.

We are calling on the University to reverse their decision to cut and contract out Administrative and Custodial staff – the backbone of the institution.

Speakers at the rally will include Rick Clarke, President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL), Alvin Comiter, President of the Faculty Union of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (FUNSCAD), Jade Peek, VP External of the Student Union of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (SUNSCAD), and Michaela Sam, Chairperson, for the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) – Nova Scotia.
