This is North American Occupational Safety & Health (NAOSH) Week (May 2 – 9, 2021)

NSGEU has been proud to host a day-long health & safety conference to kick off NAOSH week in previous years. Due to public health protocols, we have not been able to hold an in-person conference for the past two years. This year the NAOSH week organizers (including our very own OHS Officer, Paul Cormier) are hosting a virtual professional development day. It starts May 5^th at 1 pm and includes speakers Dr. Mark Fleming and Dr. Kevin Kelloway.

In honour of this week, we would also like to encourage all members to take some time to reflect on workplace health & safety. Do you have a working health & safety committee? If you don’t know, ask about it. Every workplace with employees over 5 people must have a committee and any workplace with over 20 employees must have a Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC). There are rules set out in legislation, Occupational Health & Safety Act, about how these Committees must be organized and run. If you have any questions or feel your workplace could use training on this, please contact the union. Our OHS Officer does do training on how to run an effective JOHSC.

Steps for Life

Threads of Life is an organization providing support to families who have experienced a workplace injury or tragedy. Each year they hold a Steps For Life Walk in a variety of communities across the country. In Nova Scotia, the walk is being held on Sat. May 8 at 10:30 am and is virtual.
