Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Pursuant to Article 3, Section 3.13.1 and 3.13.3 of the Union’s Constitution and By-Laws, the President may convene a Special Convention of the Union at any time; this letter will serve as Notice of the Special Convention Call.

Notice is hereby given that the Union’s Special Convention will be held:

June 2nd (Monday) 2014 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

at

Cunard Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Local Delegate Entitlement

Delegate entitlement is based upon the number of signed members shown on the Local membership list as of April 9, 2014.  Click here to see how many delegates your local is entitled to elect

Election of Delegates and Alternates

Locals must hold an emergency meeting immediately to elect Convention delegates and their alternates.

Please note and adhere to Section B5.2 of the “By-Laws section of the NSGEU Constitution & By-Laws regarding eligibility for nominations for convention delegate in effect.

 

Section B5 – Election of Local Delegates

B5.2        Except at the formation of a new Local, to be eligible for nomination as a delegate or alternate to convention, a member shall have attended at least forty percent (40%) of the members Local meetings in the twelve (12) month period preceding the date of nominations. Members of a Local shall be deemed to have attended the local meetings if they are unable to attend due to attending to union business or scheduled to work at the time of the Local meeting and have notified the Secretary of the Local in writing.

In accordance with the Constitution, all delegates are to be elected through the normal process of nomination and balloting, with the successful candidates receiving more than 50% of the votes cast.  Alternates are to be elected in the same manner through a separate ballot. (Please refer to ByLaws, Section B3 (p. 49) of the NSGEU Constitution and ByLaws for the procedures governing elections of local delegates.)

The names of the elected delegates and their alternates and a copy of the minutes from this meeting must be submitted to the Executive Director no later than May 6, 2014.  Locals are encouraged to hold their meetings as soon as possible to allow as much time as possible for the submission of time off requests.

 

Section 3.13 – Special Convention

3.13.4  At a Special Convention the only business which may be taken up shall be that which has been announced in the Convention Call.  Other business may be taken up with two- thirds (2/3) majority vote of the delegates present.

 

The Agenda for this Special Convention is as follows:

  • Bill 30 Essential Home-support Services (2014) Act
  • Bill 37 Essential Health and Community Services Act
  • Restructuring of the District Health Authorities
  • Collective Bargaining
  • Resolutions with respect to the business of this convention, as determined by the NSGEU Board of Directors, will be provided to delegates at least ten (10) days prior to convention.

 

Convention Registration

Convention registration will take place on Sunday, June 1st between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Westin Nova Scotia Hotel and on Monday, June 2nd between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at
